Shooting For Sheeple Votes. Where is the justice?

September 13, 2013

By ROBERT JAMES Sheeple is a term that highlights the herd behavior of people by likening them to sheep, a herd animal. The term is used to describe those who voluntarily acquiesce to a suggestion without critical analysis or research. People unable to think for themselves. Followers. Lemmings. Those with no cognitive abilities of their own. The full information on Sammy Yatim’s death has yet to be released publicly. We do not have all the facts, yet for a city councilor to pander to the public’s misguided rage is sickening. While it is clear Sammy was mentally challenged, the police can not be faulted for not being social workers. When the life of yourself and fellow officers is on the line, a split second is all it takes. In this situation the police can not weigh the possibility of mental illness v.s. narcotic induced psychosis. It was very clear Vince Weiguang Li is severely deranged. The perpetrator survived a police takedown, found not criminally responsible for murder, and lives comfortably at the Selkirk mental health facility. Li is allowed to go for walks around the low-security grounds and there is talk of his release. Where is justice for Tim McLean? Garnet Caton, a 26-year-old seismic driller who sat one row ahead of McLean, described hearing “a blood-curdling scream” saying “I turned around and the guy sitting right behind me was standing up and stabbing another guy with a big Rambo knife…. right in the throat. Repeatedly!” While Sammy Yatim did not yet have the chance to cause harm, to the police they have only a brief moment in time to consider a clear and present danger to their lives. No mentally fit police officer ever wants to unholster their firearm in the line of duty, but as a requirement of the job they must be able to protect themselves and the public. The simple fact is mental illness is not an excuse to violently act out, nor is being under the influence of drugs; whether you are a peace officer or a civilian. We need to support both the family of Sammy and the police, while allowing the facts to become public. Janet Davis believes the police did nothing to save his life, yet that day the public was saved, as was the TTC driver and our police responders. For Janet Davis to immediately side with the highly emotional crowd for political advancement is just another in a long line of moves that proves she is unfit for office!
